Aprecia “Preem” Cabey is a social and environmental justice activist currently residing in the Capital Region of New York State. Preem is originally from Spanish Harlem NYC and moved to the Capital District at the age of 14. She received behavioral health services during her adolescence and post-adolescence. Preem experienced severe traumatic experiences at a young age including losing a parent to gun violence. Preem would later reside in a group home that provided respite care for youth. After graduating high school, Preem attended Plattsburgh State University with a focus on communication and media. Preem created Our Art Class for her two sons as a trauma sensitive multi-media recreational activity. Our Art Class reclaims recreational time, transforms interpersonal communication skills, and creates physical, visual, and performing works of art as a community.
Preem is a graduate of the SUNY Albany Emerging Nonprofit leadership accelerator and a former climate justice fellow for NYSERDA. Preem serves as a board member and policy maker with many boards in the City of Albany including Albany Community Land Trust (Housing Justice), Albany County Youth Bureau, Albany County Probation; Junior Community Accountability Board, Albany County Advance Albany County Alliance (MWBE Advisory Board), Giffen Memorial Elementary School; A Community School, and former vice-president of her local Lion’s club. She is a parent, CEO, president, founder, stakeholder, moderator, director, and human. In 2022 Preem joined the Healthy Minds Healthy Kids Campaign and was elected council leader in 2023. Preem has advocated for solutions not suspensions, more support for families seeking behavioral health services, and other causes that hit home.
